Angel Dean’s Solo Art Exhibition

Afternoon sunlight poured into the intimate Mary Castelnovo Gallery at the Providence Art Club. Rhode Island artist, Angel Dean, boldly filled the gallery with her solo exhibition called Flesh, Flora, and Flux. This emboldened exhibition is alive with paintings that present colorful florals, luscious forms, and vivid movement.

Working in a variety of mediums from cold wax, encaustic paint, oil, and even marble dust, Dean’s work pulls you into deep reflection. She celebrates vivid colors and shapes, both in her paintings and sculptural forms.

Her powerful sculptural forms, created with plaster of Paris, gouache, and encaustic paint, command an entire wall. Each piece was delicious and sensual and had its own unique voice that seemed to call out. It was hard not to touch the work!

Dean’s cold wax and oil floral paintings were from a garden of dreams. Vibrant blue ferns, juicy purple leaves, and delicate green shapes felt like a magical garden in the clouds. Dean’s ability to infuse each piece with emotion and vitality was nothing short of remarkable.

The work that captured my attention for its inspiration was Dean’s “Pandemic Sketchbook.” She upcycled an old art book. Every day, during the pandemic, she would paint, draw, print, or doodle. This is where Dean allowed herself to play and be free. For me personally, it was the most exciting of her work and you could see her seeds of discovery. She allowed herself to be vulnerable and open. One page would offer splattered Day-Glo paint, while another page was layered with collage. The visual freedom was thrilling and motivating. Ultimately, that playfulness turned into a beautiful reality on the walls. The exhibition is up until October 5, 2023.
