Fuller Craft Museum
I went to the Fuller to see the paper clay main exhibit. It was fabulous
and each piece amazing.
Yet it was another exhibit at the end of my stay that left the strongest impression. Michelle Samour explores boundaries and diaspora through traditional Palestinian crafts.
She uses mirror images of the outlines of Israel, Gaza, West Bank and Jerusalem to make her modern take on traditional local artistry. The work was both mind provoking and stunning.
Her range was from tapestry to cut out mother of pearl.
My favorite was the hand made abaca paper dyed in saffron pigment and hand painted with gouache and acrylic, with pieces of mother of pearl.
thanks for writing about these shows Lelia, I don’t get out of Maine often so I appreciate it!
Her name is spelled Samour. I saw this exhibit last week and I went especially to see her work. She is a friend and I have followed her work for many years. Michelle is known for her paper pieces and has done many wonderful installations with her handmade paper.
Wow, these are beautiful and the connection to traditions is wonderful. Thanks
Thanks for bringing attention to this show. From concept to finished pieces, it’s just wonderful.
