Unfolding Time: Stephanie Roberts-Camello
January 3-February 29, 2024 at the Helen Bumpus Gallery located in the Duxbury Free Library

Unfolding Time is an apt title for this wonderful show of the encaustic paintings of Stephanie Roberts-Camello. Stephanie approaches encaustic in a very unique way, layering historical family letters with encaustic paint then pulling back, revealing and folding the encaustic layers into sculptural forms.

Some of the shapes look like waves or protective shrouds. Many of the letters date back to the dust bowl days in Texas and the Great Depression and speak about the hard times farmers and cattlemen had out west.

Stephanie creates mesmerizing patterns in rich palettes of color, relating to the pathways that shape a life. She has also used eco-printed fabric, (a technique where plants, leaves and flowers leave their shapes, color, and marks.) or photos that she created in the darkroom as base layers in a few pieces. A viewer can get lost in the intricate details and complex forms that result from her careful manipulation of the wax. The show has 23 pieces to view, an in depth look at her work. Don’t miss it!
